Saint Simon Stock was an English hermit that lived in the hollow of a tree, and this how "stock" came about in his name. In the early ages of Carmelites, they were hermits who lived on Mount Carmel, near Nazareth in the Holy Land. When the Carmelites spread to England, they were no longer hermits but became frairs that work and mingle with society.
On 16 July 1251, Our Lady appeared to Saint Simon Stock, the Father of the Carmelite Order and presented him with the Scapular for the Carmelites Order with the promise, saying "Receive, my beloved son, this scapular of your Order, it is the special sign of my favor, which I have obtained for you and for your children of Mount Carmel. He who dies clothed with this habit shall be preserved from eternal fire. It is the sign of salvation, a shield in time of danger, and a pledge of special peace and protection".
Secondly, wearing the Scapular is the Sabbatine Privilege, as in a promise made by Our Lady to Pope John XXII. In his papal letter, he recounted his vision of Our Lady and stated that the Blessed Virgin had said about those who wear the Brown Scapular. She said "I, the Mother of Grace, shall descend on the Saturday after their death and whomsoever I shall find in Purgatory, I shall free, so that I may lead them to the holy mountain of life everlasting."
Feast day of Saint Simon Stock is celebrated on 16 May.
Feast day of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel is celebrated on 16 July.

O Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein that you are my Mother.O Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart, to succor me in this my necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. O show me herein that you are my Mother.
O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us that have recourse to thee. (3 times)
Sweet Mother, I place this cause in your hands. (3 times)
True devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary consists 3 important ingredients of faith,
~ Veneration
~ Confidence
~ Love
By wearing the Scapular devoutly and continuously, we can tell her that we venerate her, love her and trust in her protection, in every moment of our life.
According to the Sacred Congregation of Indulgences wool is necessary and to be used exclusively in the making of scapulars.
