Increase faith, hope, and charity in me and bring forth in me all the virtues proper to my state of life. Help me to grow in the four cardinal virtues, Your seven gifts, and Your twelve fruits.
Make me a faithful follower of Jesus, an obedient child of the Church, and a help to my neighbor. Give me the grace to keep the commandments and to receive the sacraments worthily. Raise me to holiness in the state of life to which You have called me, and lead me through a happy death to everlasting life. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Grant me also, O Holy Spirit, Giver of all good gifts, the special favor for which I ask [name the favor here], if it be for Your honor and glory and for my well being.
Amen.
Glory Be....
The four cardinal virtues are :
1. Prudence is the virtue that allows us to judge correctly what is right and what is wrong in any given situation.
2. Justice is the constant and permanent determination to give everyone his or her rightful due.
3. Fortitude (or courage) is to restraint of fear so that we can act. Allows us to overcome fear and to remain steady in our will in the face of obstacles, but it is always reasoned and reasonable
4. Temperance (or moderation) is to the restraint of our desires or passions.
Prudence and justice are the virtues through which we decide what needs to be done; fortitude gives us the strength to do it.
The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit are :1. Wisdom is the first and highest gift of the Holy Spirit, because it is the perfection of faith. Through wisdom, we come to value properly those things which we believe through faith.
2. Understanding is the second gift of the Holy Spirit. It allows us grasp, at least in a limited way, the very essence of the truths of the Catholic Faith.
3. Counsel is the third gift of the Holy Spirit, the perfection of the cardinal virtue of prudence. With this gift, we are able to judge how best to act almost by intuition.
4. Fortitude is the fourth gift, is the perfection of a cardinal virtue, fortitude is both a gift of the Holy Spirit and a cardinal virtue. Fortitude is the virtue of the martyrs that allows them to suffer death rather than to renounce the Christian Faith.
5. Knowledge is the fifth gift of the Holy Spirit, knowledge, is often confused with both wisdom and understanding. Allows us to see the circumstances of our life the way that God sees them. Like wisdom, knowledge is the perfection of faith, but whereas wisdom gives us the desire to judge all things according to the truths of the Catholic Faith, knowledge is the actual ability to do so.
6. Piety is the sixth gift of the Holy Spirit, is the perfection of the virtue of religion. It takes that willingness beyond a sense of duty, so that we desire to worship God and to serve Him out of love, the way that we desire to honor our parents and do what they wish.
7. Fear of the Lord is the seventh and final gift of the Holy Spirit is the fear of the Lord, and perhaps no other gift of the Holy Spirit is so misunderstood. This gift gives us the desire not to offend God, as well as the certainty that God will supply us the grace that we need in order to keep from offending Him.
