Temptation

What is temptation?

Temptation is an attraction to commit sin.

Can you always overcome temptation?

Yes, because no temptation can force you into sin, and God will always help you.

"And God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that which you are able: but will make also with temptation issue, that you may be able to bear it." (1 Corinthians 10:13)

What should you do when you are tempted?

First, ask God to help you, and then, get busy doing something else. 

"And lead us not into temptation. But deliver us from evil." (Matthew 6:13).

How can you avoid temptations?

Avoid all persons, places or things that may lead you into sin, and ask God for actual graces.

What are actual graces?

They are "helps" from God which enlighten the mind and strengthen the will to do good and avoid evil.

"My grace is sufficient for thee: for power is made perfect in infirmity." (2 Corinthians 12:9).

Actual graces come and go, but Sanctifying Grace remains in the soul. Sanctifying Grace is LIFE, actual grace is HELP.

The temptation cycle 

Saint Mary Magdalene

In the gospels, Mary Magdalene is one of among the Galilean women who followed Jesus during His ministry together with His disciples. Many assumption that Mary Magdalene, was a great sinner. All of the four the four gospels mentions about Mary Magdalene, but not once it is written within any of the gospels or claimed in bible that she was a adulterous woman that portrayed in some writing or movies. People may have confused themselves of Mary Magdalene with two other woman in the gospels, first Mary of Bethany (the sister of Martha and Lazarus), and second the sinful woman (Luke 7:36-50), who wiped Jesus feet with the hair, kissed his feet, and anointed them with ointment. As in Luke 8:1-3, we are knowledgeable that Jesus cast out seven demons of Mary Magdalene, after this event she began following Jesus in His ministry. Mary Magdalene is considered a saint by the Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Anglican, and Lutheran churches with a feast day of 22 July annually. She was present at the time of Jesus passions, suffering and crucifixion where she stood by the cross with Jesus's beloved mother, Mary and John. She was also involved in the burial of Jesus anointing his body with spices in the tomb, discover that the tomb had been open, and she stood weeping outside the tomb and she was the first to see the Risen Christ (John 20:11-18).

John 20:11-18

But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” Saying this, she turned round and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom do you seek?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Hebrew, “Rab-bo′ni!” (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her, “Do not hold me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brethren and say to them, I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.” Mary Mag′dalene went and said to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”; and she told them that he had said these things to her.

Jesus is saying I am Love! have confidence in My Mercy and I am always forgiving

I am Love! My Heart can no longer contain its devouring flames. I love souls so dearly that I have sacrificed My life for them. Yes, I am that Jesus who loves souls tenderly . . . Behold this Heart that never ceases calling them, guarding them, and caring for them . . . Behold this Heart on fire with longing for their love, but especially for the love of My chosen ones. For love of souls, I instituted the Sacrament of Penance, that I might forgive them, not once or twice, but as often as they need it to recover grace. There I wait for them, longing to wash away their sins, not in water, but in My Blood. How often in the course of the ages have I, in one way or another, made known My love for men: I have shown them how ardently I desire their salvation. I have revealed My Heart to them. I want souls to have confidence in My mercy, to expect all from My clemency, and never to doubt My readiness to forgive. My appeal is addressed to all: to those consecrated in religion and those living in the world, to the good and to sinners, to the learned and the illiterate, to those in authority and to those who obey. To each of them I come to say: if you seek happiness you will find it in Me. If riches, I am infinite wealth. If you desire peace, in Me alone is peace found. I am Mercy and Love! and I must be sovereign King.

The Hebrews, the Israelite and the Jews

Hebrew are the descendants of Abrahams forefather Eber, which includes Abraham. 

Israelites are the descendants of Abraham through his son Israel (Jacob). Israel was the name God gave to Jacob when he wrestled with an angel to get a blessing. 

Jews (Jewish people) are member of the tribe of Judah and kingdom of Judah. They are “Judahite”, or a descendant of Judah, the fourth son of Jacob and grandson of Abraham.

Psalm 114:25: "Judah was his sanctuary, and Israel his dominion."

Israel were to inherit the dominion of God’s Kingdom, whilst Judah, as the Lord’s sanctuary, was to provide the King over that dominion.

The word “Israel” was not even mention prior to Jacob given the name “Israel” in Genesis 32:28 and thereafter his descendants were known as Israelites. "Jew" or "men of Judah" was first mentioned in 2 Kings 16:6.

The northern House of Israel, which came from Joseph, and the southern House of Judah, which came from Judah, each had their God -appointed tasks and destinies to fulfil in kingship of our Lord Jesus Christ, was to come from and through Judah. Therefore, the prophets displayed meticulous care in addressing “The House of Israel”, “The House of Judah”, and “The inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Jews.”

A good prayer, we can pray for all priests

O loving Mother Mary, Mother of Priests, take to your heart your sons who are close to you because of their priestly ordination and because of the power which they have received to carry on the work of Christ in a world which needs them so much. Be their comfort, be their joy, be their strength, and especially help them to live and to defend the ideals of consecrated celibacy.

Lord Jesus, we your people pray to You for our priests. You have given them to us for OUR needs. We pray for them in THEIR needs.

We know that You have made them priests in the likeness of your own priesthood. You have consecrated them, set them aside, anointed them, filled them with the Holy Spirit, appointed them to teach, to preach, to minister, to console, to forgive, and to feed us with Your Body and Blood.

Yet we know, too, that they are one with us and share our human weaknesses. We know too that they are tempted to sin and discouragement as are we, needing to be ministered to, as do we, to be consoled and forgiven, as do we. Indeed, we thank You for choosing them from among us, so that they understand us as we understand them, suffer with us and rejoice with us, worry with us and trust with us, share our beings, our lives, our faith.

We ask that You give them this day the gift You gave Your chosen ones on the way to Emmaus: Your presence in their hearts, Your holiness in their souls, Your joy in their spirits. And let them see You face to face in the breaking of the Eucharistic bread.

We pray to You, O Lord, through Mary the mother of all priests, for Your priests and for ours.

Saint Stanislaus, Bishop, Martyr (Commemoration) ~ Optional Memorial ~ 11 April 2014

St. Stanislaus was the Bishop of Cracow, Poland. Stanislaus Szczepanowski was born to his noble parents, Belislaus and Bogna on 26 July 1030 in Szczepanow near Cracow and was educated at Gnesen and at Paris. Lambert Zula, Bishop of Cracow, ordained him priest and made him pastor of Czembocz near Cracow. After his ordination to the priesthood he was made a canon of the cathedral at Cracow as well as archdeacon and preacher. Upon the death of the bishop of Cracow, he was nominated bishop of the diocese by Pope Alexander II. In 1072 was named Bishop of Cracow. King Boleslaus II, who was becoming notorious for his violent and depraved lifestyle. Stanislaus spared neither tears nor prayers and admonitions to bring the king to lead a more Christian life. The king was furious and followed the bishop with his guards, some of whom he sent to kill the saint. These dared not obey, Boleslaus took matters into his own hands. He ambushed Stanislaus and struck him down with a sword during his celebration of Mass at the chapel of Saint Michael, Cracow on 8 May 1079. Stanislaus was acclaimed a martyr, while Boleslaus II lost his power, became a fallen monarch and left Poland. Stanislaus was canonized 1253 by Innocent IV at Assisi, Italy. St. Stanislaus is the patron saint for Cracow, Plock, Poland and soldiers in battle.

O God, for whose honour the Bishop Saint Stanislaus fell beneath the swords of his persecutors, grant we pray, that we may persevere strong in faith even until death. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. AMEN.

Gospel ~ John 10:31-42

The Jews picked up rocks to stone Jesus.

You, a man, are making yourself God.”
Jesus answered them,

The Annunciation of the Lord (Solemnity) ~ 25 March 2014

The Feast of the Annunciation is one of the most important in the Church calendar and is not a Holy Day of Obligation but we can certainly take on the "obligation" ourselves to attend Mass. It celebrates the actual Incarnation of Our Saviour the Word made flesh in the womb of His mother, the Virgin Mary. The Annunciation has always been celebrated on 25 March, exactly nine months before Christmas Day. In the gospel of Luke 1:26-38, we see Archangel Gabriel's appearance to the Virgin Mary, his announcement that the Blessed Virgin had been chosen to be the Mother of God, and Mary's willing acceptance of God's holy plan. The Annunciation marks the beginning of God's plan for our salvation and redemption, and Mary's fiat was essential to God's plan as God foresaw Mary's acceptance of His will.

Jesus Christ, His only Son Our Lord, 

Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, 

born of the Virgin Mary

We are now in the midst of Lent, let ask ourselves, how is God calling me to carry out His will? And how close are our response like of the blessed Virgin Mary's, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.”

O God, who willed that your Word should take on the reality of human flesh in the womb of the Virgin Mary, grant, we pray, that we, who confess our Redeemer to be God and man, may merit to become partakers even in his divine nature. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. AMEN.

The Annunciation of the Lord (Solemnity)

Reading 1 ~ Isaiah 7:10-14; 8:10

The LORD spoke to Ahaz, saying:
Ask for a sign from the LORD, your God;
let it be deep as the nether world, or high as the sky!
But Ahaz answered,
“I will not ask! I will not tempt the LORD!”
Then Isaiah said:
Listen, O house of David!
Is it not enough for you to weary people,
must you also weary my God?
Therefore the Lord himself will give you this sign:
the virgin shall be with child, and bear a son,
and shall name him Emmanuel,
which means “God is with us!”

Reading 2 ~ Hebrews 10:4-10

Brothers and sisters:

Then I said, ‘As is written of me in the scroll,

First he says, “Sacrifices and offerings,
holocausts and sin offerings,
you neither desired nor delighted in.”
These are offered according to the law.
Then he says, “Behold, I come to do your will.”
He takes away the first to establish the second.
By this “will,” we have been consecrated
through the offering of the Body of Jesus Christ once for all.

Gospel ~ Luke 1:26-38

The angel Gabriel was sent from God
to a town of Galilee called Nazareth,
to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph,
of the house of David,
and the virgin’s name was Mary.
And coming to her, he said,
“Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you.”
But she was greatly troubled at what was said
and pondered what sort of greeting this might be.
Then the angel said to her,
“Do not be afraid, Mary,
for you have found favor with God.
Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son,
and you shall name him Jesus.
He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High,
and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father,
and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever,
and of his Kingdom there will be no end.”
But Mary said to the angel,
“How can this be,
since I have no relations with a man?”
And the angel said to her in reply,
“The Holy Spirit will come upon you,
and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.
Therefore the child to be born
will be called holy, the Son of God.
And behold, Elizabeth, your relative,
has also conceived a son in her old age,
and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren;
for nothing will be impossible for God.”
Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.
May it be done to me according to your word.”
Then the angel departed from her.

Prayer

O God, 

who didst will that Thy Word take flesh 

in the womb of the blessed Virgin Mary 

at the message of the angel. 

Grant us, we pray, 

to be aided before Thee by her intercession, 

whom we believe to be truly the Mother of God.

Are you prepared to obey the Lord in everything?

Are you prepared to obey the Lord in everything? Faith in God's word and obedience to His commands go hand in hand. We accept the Lord Jesus by faith who is the Son of God, and He teaches us obedience, and creates it in us. The more of faith in Him you have, the more of obedience to Him will you manifest. We must have absolute obedience to the Lord God but it is like the obedience of a child and not the obedience of a slave. God is perfect and all wise, He never commands of us that which is wrong. The Christian faith works through love, and the measure of one's love is the extent to which one keeps Christ's commandments. Love and obedience must be yoked together for obedience confirms love and love validates obedience. Christian love is manifested as a believer obeys the Lord's words.

John 14:21, whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.

1 John 2:5, but if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them.

Once you learn the truth of the Word of God, the time comes when you have to actually put it into practice and change yourself. Listening is easy, but change is difficult.

James 1:22, do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

Isaiah 1:19, if you are willing and obedient, you will eat the good things of the land.

Hebrews 11:8-10, By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God.

Through obedience, Abraham proved his trust in the Lord by his willingness to follow the Lord's commands, no matter how difficult they were. By faith Abraham obeyed, and by faith only can you and I obey and keep obeying.

Matthew 1:18-25, Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.

But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, ‘Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.’

All this took place to fulfil what the Lord had said through the prophet: ‘The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel’ (which means ‘God with us’).

When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.

Obedience to God was Joseph’s response to a deeply difficult situation. It was not an easy or painless obedience, and it did not come without cost. God entrusted a very precious gift to Joseph when He called him to be the guardian of Jesus. Joseph made the right choice. He married Mary and by this choice, Joseph will be honoured for that decision for eternity.

Deuteronomy 28:1-2, if you diligently obey the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all His commandments which I command you today, that the Lord your God will set you high above all nations of the earth. And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, because you obey the voice of the Lord your God.

Twelve test by God to Abraham

Test 1: Genesis 12:1-7

For Abraham: Abraham left Ur and Haran for an unknown destination at God’s direction.

For us: Do I trust God with my future? Is his will part of my decision making.

Test 2: Genesis 13:8-13

For Abraham: Abraham directed a peaceful separation from Lot and settled at the oaks of Mamre.

For us: Do I trust God with my interests even when I seem to be receiving an unfair settlement.

Test 3: Genesis 14:13-18

For Abraham: Abraham rescued Lot from the five kings.

For us: Does my faithfulness to others bear witness to my trust in God’s faithfulness'

Test 4: Genesis 14:17-24

For Abraham: Abraham gave a tithe of loot to the godly king of Salem, Melchizedek, and refused the gift of the king of Sodom.

For us: Am I watchful in my dealings with people that I give proper honour to God and refuse to receive honour that belongs to him.

Test 5: Genesis 15:1-6

For Abraham: Abraham trusted God’s promise that he would have a son.

For us: How often do I consciously reaffirm my trust in God’s promises.

Test 6: Genesis 15:7-11

For Abraham: Abraham received the promised land by faith, though the fulfilment would not come for many generations.

For us: How have I demonstrated my continued trust in God during those times when I have been required to wait.

Test 7: Genesis 17:9-27

For Abraham: At God’s command, Abraham circumcised every male in his family.

For us: In what occasions in my life have I acted simply in obedience to God, and not because I understood the significance of what I was doing.

Test 8: Genesis 18:1-8

For Abraham: Abraham welcomed strangers, who turned out to be angels.

For us: When was the last time I practised hospitality.

Test 9: Genesis 18:22-33

For Abraham: Abraham prayed for Sodom.

For us: Am I eager to see people punished, or do I care for people in spite of their sinfulness.

Test 10: Genesis 20:1-17

For Abraham: Abraham admitted to wrongdoing and took the actions needed to set things right.

For us: When I sin, is my tendency to cover up, or confess? Do I practice the truth that an apology must sometimes be accompanied by restitution.

Test 11: Genesis 21:22-34

For Abraham: Abraham negotiated a treaty with Abimelech concerning a well.

For us: Can people depend on my words and promises.

Test 12: Genesis 22:1-12

For Abraham: Abraham prepared to sacrifice his son Isaac.

For us: In what ways has my life demonstrated that I will not allow anything to come before God.

Genesis 22:12, Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.

God expects no less obedience of us today. Trusting God at times requires us to follow Him when His commands defy human logic but the good news is that if we pass the test of faith, we will reap the benefits God has promised us. Obedience has it's rewards. When we miss God commands and disobey Him, we must be quick to repent and get back on the path of obedience, like King David.

Psalm 51: 1-7

A psalm of David. 

When the prophet Nathan came to him 

after David had committed adultery with Bathsheba.

1 Have mercy on me, O God,

according to your unfailing love;

according to your great compassion

blot out my transgressions.

2 Wash away all my iniquity

and cleanse me from my sin.

3 For I know my transgressions,

and my sin is always before me.

4 Against you, you only, have I sinned

and done what is evil in your sight;

so you are right in your verdict

and justified when you judge.

5 Surely I was sinful at birth,

sinful from the time my mother conceived me.

6 Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb;

you taught me wisdom in that secret place.

7 Cleanse me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;

wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

Hebrews 5:7-9, during the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him.

General intention, is now called the Universal intention which addresses a need or category relevant to all people and all cultures, such as, the elderly, respect for women, the media, the unemployed, refugees, and the lonely. Mission intention, is now called the Evangelization intention, introducing people everywhere to the person of Jesus Christ, for conversion begins and there is no end in that relationship between Christ and the believer. Pope Francis sees prayer as the first step in the New Evangelization.

16 March 2014 ~ As the search for the missing aircraft enters into its second week, Pope Francis urged pilgrims at St. Peter's Square in Rome and people everywhere to pray for those on board missing Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 and their families, said Vatican Insider.

“I invite you to remember in prayer the passengers and crew of the Malaysia airline, and for their families. We are close to them in this difficult moment” said Pope Francis.

JESUS, I can never repay the debt of Your love

JESUS, in my transgressions 

You took pity on my poor soul
