Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the season of Lent, the first day of Lent and 46 (40 days - not including Sundays) days to Easter Sunday, the final week of Lent is known as Holy Week. It is a time of penance, reflection, and fasting, we seek God's Divine mercy. God is gracious and merciful to those who call on Him with repentant hearts. Our foreheads are marked with ashes (imposition of ashes) to humble our hearts and reminds us that life passes away on Earth. We recall this as when the priest says "Remember, Man is dust, and unto dust you shall return." (Genesis 3:19) as he marks our foreheads with ashes. This reminds us of our sinfulness and imperfections, which calls us to prepare to receive the forgiveness in Christ, an opportunity for repentance and spiritual renewal by confession and absolution. Ashes are a symbol of penance made sacramental by the blessing of the Church, and they help us develop a spirit of humility and sacrifice. Ash Wednesday is the beginning for us to prepare during the season of lent in anticipation for Christ's Resurrection on Easter Sunday, through which we attain redemption.
Abstinence from eating meat is to be observed/encouraged on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays (most important to be observed on Good Friday) during Lent. Fasting is encourage/applicable to all Christians between the age of 13 to 60, older than may also fast if they are capable of doing so. The Catholic liturgical colour for Lent is violet/purple, all vestments and hangings in the altar/church will observed the colour. During Lent, no Alleluia or Gloria is sung/recited, Alleluia or Gloria is only resumed on Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday.
Ash Wednesday Prayer
O Jesus, you place on my forehead
the sign of your saving Cross:
“Turn from sin and be faithful
to the gospel.”
How can I turn from sin
unless I turn to you?
You speak, you raise your hand,
you touch my mind and call my name,
“Turn to the Lord your God again.”
These days of your favor
leave a blessing as you pass
on me and all your people.
Turn to us, Lord God,
and we shall turn to you.
AMEN.
Grant, O Lord, that we may begin with holy fasting this campaign of Christian service, so that, as we take up battle against spiritual evils, we may be armed with weapons of self-restraint. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. AMEN.

and relenting in punishment.
Perhaps he will again relent
and leave behind him a blessing,
Offerings and libations
for the LORD, your God.
Blow the trumpet in Zion!
proclaim a fast,
call an assembly;
Gather the people,
notify the congregation;
Assemble the elders,
gather the children
and the infants at the breast;
Let the bridegroom quit his room
and the bride her chamber.
Between the porch and the altar
let the priests, the ministers of the LORD, weep,
And say, “Spare, O LORD, your people,
and make not your heritage a reproach,
with the nations ruling over them!
Why should they say among the peoples,
‘Where is their God?’”

and took pity on his people.

they have received their reward.
But when you give alms,
do not let your left hand know what your right is doing,
so that your almsgiving may be secret.
And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.
“When you pray,
do not be like the hypocrites,
who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners
so that others may see them.
Amen, I say to you,
they have received their reward.
But when you pray, go to your inner room,
close the door, and pray to your Father in secret.
And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.
“When you fast,
do not look gloomy like the hypocrites.
They neglect their appearance,
so that they may appear to others to be fasting.
Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.
But when you fast,
anoint your head and wash your face,
so that you may not appear to be fasting,
except to your Father who is hidden.
And your Father who sees what is hidden will repay you.”
