Dear God, open a door for my message, so that I may proclaim the mystery of Christ. I pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should. Colossians 4:3-4

St. Anthony the Abbot ~ Feast (Memorial)

Feast day: 17 January (memorial)

Prayer

Saint Anthony,
you spoke of
the importance of persevering
in our faith and our practice.
Help us to wake up
each day with new zeal
for the Christian life
and desire to take
the next challenge
instead of just sitting still.
AMEN.

If you think me wise, become what I am,
for we ought to imitate the good.
Had I gone to you, I should have imitated you,
but since you have come to me, become what I am,
for I am a Christian.
~ Anthony the Abbot ~

O God, who brought the Abbot Saint Anthony to serve you by a wondrous way of life in the desert, grant, through his intercession, that, denying ourselves, we may always love you above all things. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. AMEN.

St. Anthony, Abbot (Memorial)

Reading
1 Samuel 8: 4 - 7, 10 - 22

4Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah,
5and said to him, "Behold, you are old and your sons do not walk in your ways; now appoint for us a king to govern us like all the nations."
6But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, "Give us a king to govern us." And Samuel prayed to the LORD.
7And the LORD said to Samuel, "Hearken to the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being king over them.
10So Samuel told all the words of the LORD to the people who were asking a king from him.
11He said, "These will be the ways of the king who will reign over you: he will take your sons and appoint them to his chariots and to be his horsemen, and to run before his chariots;
12and he will appoint for himself commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and some to plow his ground and to reap his harvest, and to make his implements of war and the equipment of his chariots.
13He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers.
14He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive orchards and give them to his servants.
15He will take the tenth of your grain and of your vineyards and give it to his officers and to his servants.
16He will take your menservants and maidservants, and the best of your cattle and your asses, and put them to his work.
17He will take the tenth of your flocks, and you shall be his slaves.
18And in that day you will cry out because of your king, whom you have chosen for yourselves; but the LORD will not answer you in that day."
19But the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel; and they said, "No! but we will have a king over us,
20that we also may be like all the nations, and that our king may govern us and go out before us and fight our battles."
21And when Samuel had heard all the words of the people, he repeated them in the ears of the LORD.
22And the LORD said to Samuel, "Hearken to their voice, and make them a king." Samuel then said to the men of Israel, "Go every man to his city."

Psalm
Psalms 89: 16 - 19

16who exult in thy name all the day, and extol thy righteousness.
17For thou art the glory of their strength; by thy favor our horn is exalted.
18For our shield belongs to the LORD, our king to the Holy One of Israel.
19Of old thou didst speak in a vision to thy faithful one, and say: "I have set the crown upon one who is mighty, I have exalted one chosen from the people.

Gospel
Mark 2: 1 - 12

1And when he returned to Caper'na-um after some days, it was reported that he was at home.
2And many were gathered together, so that there was no longer room for them, not even about the door; and he was preaching the word to them.
3And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men.
4And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him; and when they had made an opening, they let down the pallet on which the paralytic lay.
5And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "My son, your sins are forgiven."
6Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts,
7"Why does this man speak thus? It is blasphemy! Who can forgive sins but God alone?"
8And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, "Why do you question thus in your hearts?
9Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, `Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, `Rise, take up your pallet and walk'?
10But that you may know that the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins" -- he said to the paralytic --
11"I say to you, rise, take up your pallet and go home."
12And he rose, and immediately took up the pallet and went out before them all; so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, "We never saw anything like this!"

About St. Anthony, the Abbot
Anthony was born in 251 at Coma, a village near Great Heracleopolis in central  Egypt, where he grew up in a very protective and well-off family.  On the death of his parents, he inherited a large estate.  Then, in church one day, he heard the words of the Gospel: “Go, sell what you have and give to the poor” (Matt 19:21).  He took the words as addressed to himself and sold off the whole of the estate, only keeping what he felt he needed for his sister and himself.  Later, he heard the call, “Do not be anxious about tomorrow” (Matt 6:34).  This led him to give away what he still had, he put his sister in a convent and, still only 21 years of age, became a hermit.  He lived alone, working with his hands, praying and doing religious reading.  He only ate bread with salt and only drank water.  He slept on a rush mat.  He was soon seen as a model of humility, holiness and self-discipline.  He was assailed by many temptations, some very persuasive during this period but managed to resist them all.

For many years, Anthony lived in a tomb near his birthplace but, at the age of 35, moved to the ruins of an old castle on top of a mountain. There he lived for almost 20 years, seeing no one except a person who brought him food every six months!  At the end of that time he set up his first monastery, which consisted of separate cells, each occupied by one monk (something like the Carthusians today).  But he still lived mainly on his own, only visiting the monastery when necessary.  In spite of his austere life, he always gave the impression of being energetic and joyful.  People could pick him out from among the other monks simply by his cheeriness.  Many came long distances to speak with him.  And he was as ready to learn from them as they came to learn from him.

At the age of 60, during a time of religious persecution, he went to Alexandria hoping to earn martyrdom but was not arrested.  Later still, he returned to Alexandria to refute the Arians, who denied the divinity of Jesus Christ but, in spite of being asked to stay on in the city, he returned to his life as a hermit.  He died about the year 356, traditionally on 17 January.  He is said to have lived to the remarkable age of 105, never having been sick, still with good sight and sound teeth.  He is regarded as the “Father of Monks”.  Several groups of Eastern monks may still be following his teaching and he certainly influenced later development of monastic life in the Church.

Happy Birthday, Saint Bernadette!

January 7: On this day in 1844, Bernadette Soubirous was born in Lourdes, France. Our Lady appeared to her in 1858, telling her, "I am the Immaculate Conception." When dying in 1879, Bernadette said, "Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for me, a poor sinner." St. Bernadette's body is in-corrupt to this day (see photo) and can be seen by the public at the convent in Nevers, France.
Happy Birthday, Saint Bernadette!

JESUS, King of Mercy, have mercy on us and on the whole world

Christ in distressing disguise

Hungry not only for bread
but hungry for love.
Naked not only for clothing
but naked of human dignity and respect.
Homeless not only for want of a room of bricks
but homeless because of rejection.
This is Christ in distressing disguise.

The Most Holy Name of Jesus (Memorial)

JESUS, the name above all names.
Whenever we say or call His holy name,
we ought to bow our heads or/and kneel
for His holy name reminds us
of the greatest favour we have ever received
from God the Father,
"our Salvation"
in saving us from our sin by the agony, suffering and death
of His only begotten Son on the Cross.
God Loves Us
JESUS,
Our Saviour,
Our Redeemer,
Our Armour,
Our Healer,
and
Our Provider.

JESUS in Your Holy Name
I TRUST in Thee.

Jesus was the perfect unblemished lamb offered by the Father in heaven as the one and only sacrifice that could cancel the debt of sin, and free us from death and the destruction of body and soul in hell.

God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.
~ Philippians 2:9-11 ~

The memorial of the Most Holy Name of Jesus is celebrated by the Roman Catholic church on 3 January and it is an optional memorial.
I.H.S a monogram of the Jesuit (the Society of Jesus) stands for Iesus Hominum Salvator in Latin which means Jesus, Saviour of man. Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world as declared by John the Baptist. It also stands for In His Service. In the middle ages when JESUS name was written as "IHESUS", therefore I.H.S was the abbreviation for the holy name of Jesus where the first, second and last characters form it.

Prayer to the Holy Name
JESUS,
Name full of glory, grace, love and strength!
You are the refuge of those who repent,
our banner of warfare in this life,
the medicine of souls,
the comfort of those who morn,
the delight of those who believe,
the light of those who preach the true faith,
the wages of those who toil,
the healing of the sick.
To You our devotion aspires;
by You our prayers are received;
we delight in contemplating You.
O Name of JESUS,
You are the glory of all the saints for eternity.
AMEN.
~ St. Bernardine of Siena ~

O sweet Name of JESUS,
holy above all names in heaven and on earth,
and to which every knee,
both of men and of angels
in heaven, on earth and in hell bends.
You are the the way of the just,
the glory of the saints,
the hope of those in need,
the balm of the sick,
the love of the devout
and the consolation of those that suffer.
O, JESUS be to me a help and a protector
so that your Name may be blessed for all times.
AMEN.
(Manualis Parvulorum XIII)
Thomas A. Kempis

O God, who founded the salvation of the human race on the Incarnation of your Word, give your peoples the mercy they implore, so that all may know there is no other name to be invoked but the Name of your Only Begotten Son. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. AMEN.

The Most Holy Name of Jesus (Memorial)

Reading 1
Philippians 2: 5 - 11

5Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,
6who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,
7but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
8And being found in human form he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross.
9Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name,
10that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Psalm
Psalms 113: 1 - 8

1Praise the LORD! Praise, O servants of the LORD, praise the name of the LORD!
2Blessed be the name of the LORD from this time forth and for evermore!
3From the rising of the sun to its setting the name of the LORD is to be praised!
4The LORD is high above all nations, and his glory above the heavens!
5Who is like the LORD our God, who is seated on high,
6who looks far down upon the heavens and the earth?
7He raises the poor from the dust, and lifts the needy from the ash heap,
8to make them sit with princes, with the princes of his people.

Gospel
Matthew 1: 18 - 23

18Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit;
19and her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly.
20But as he considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit;
21she will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins."
22All this took place to fulfil what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:
23"Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and his name shall be called Emmanuel" (which means, God with us).

The Epiphany of the Lord (Solemnity)

Every nation on the earth shall adore you, O Lord
and Your light shall overcome all darkness.
Glory to You, Lord in the Highest.

The feast of the Epiphany of the Lord is celebrated on the Sunday between January 2 and January 8 in dioceses within most countries. Epiphany originated from a Greek word which means "to reveal". Today, 5 January, 2014 is the solemnity celebration of the Epiphany of the Lord, and it marks end of the 12 days of Christmas (Christmastide), which began with the revelation of Christ to Israel at His birth (25 December) and today ends with the revelation of Christ to the Gentiles (revelation of God to man). Epiphany also is known as Theophany (Three Kings Day - the day on which the 3 Wise Man brought their gifts to the infant Jesus, the Emmanuel and the Messiah) by both Eastern Catholics and Eastern Orthodox churches. The Epiphany of the Lord is a great day for the Catholic church where it is one part of the mystery of the Incarnation. At Christmas, the Word of God as foretold by the prophets was fulfilled and God has become man, and now it is reveal to all mankind that the child born of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Mother of God) is the omnipotent God, the King and Ruler of the universe.

The revelation of God to man (Epiphany) is seen four different event in Jesus's early life, which are as follows:
  • The Baptism of the Lord - the Holy Spirit descends and God the Father declared that Jesus is His Son.
  • Jesus's miracle at the wedding in Cana - Jesus Christ divinity is reveal as changes jars of water to wine.
  • The Nativity of the Lord - the angels proclaim, sing praises and bear witness to birth Jesus, the Emmanual and Messiah , and the shepherds, representing the people of Israel, follows the angels words and bow down before Him.
  • The Epiphany of the Lord - the visitation of the Magi (the three kings / wise men), who followed a bright star in the east to Bethlehem where Jesus had been born, bearing gifts fit for a King as in Matthew 2:11,"And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh". Here Jesus Christ's divinity is made known to the Gentiles, the other nations of the earth.
"This day the Church
is joined to her heavenly Spouse,
for Christ has cleansed
her crimes in the Jordan.
With gifts the Magi hasten
to the royal nuptials,
and the guests are gladdened
with wine made from water."

We too must have the courage to follow the light of the star like the wise men, however difficult the journey, we must pursue that the light of our faith, and to be so strong so that we are able to see and recognize our Lord and our King in whatever way as Jesus will show Himself to us. In recognizing and accepting as our King and the son of God who bring us salvation, we should bow down and adore Him, offering Him our total loyalty and glorifying Him. And upon returning like the three wise men, we should bring the light of Jesus Christ to all we meet.

"For behold, darkness
shall cover the earth and a mist the people,
but the Lord shall arise upon Thee,
and His glory shall be seen upon Thee.
And the Gentiles shall walk in Thy light...."
~ Epistle of the Epiphany Mass ~

O God, Who by the guidance of a star didst this day reveal Thine only-begotten Son to the Gentiles, mercifully grant that we, who know Thee now by faith, may be so led as to behold with our eyes the beauty of Thy majesty. Through the same Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen. ~ from the Mass of St. Pius V

The Epiphany of the Lord (Solemnity)

May the splendour of your majesty, O Lord, we pray, shed its light upon our hearts, that we may pass through the shadows of this world and reach the brightness of our eternal home. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Reading 1
Isaiah 60: 1 - 6

1Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD has risen upon you.
2For behold, darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the LORD will arise upon you, and his glory will be seen upon you.
3And nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising.
4Lift up your eyes round about, and see; they all gather together, they come to you; your sons shall come from far, and your daughters shall be carried in the arms.
5Then you shall see and be radiant, your heart shall thrill and rejoice; because the abundance of the sea shall be turned to you, the wealth of the nations shall come to you.
6A multitude of camels shall cover you, the young camels of Mid'ian and Ephah; all those from Sheba shall come. They shall bring gold and frankincense, and shall proclaim the praise of the LORD.

Psalm
Psalms 72: 1 - 2, 7 - 8, 10 - 13

1Give the king thy justice, O God, and thy righteousness to the royal son!
2May he judge thy people with righteousness, and thy poor with justice!
7In his days may righteousness flourish, and peace abound, till the moon be no more!
8May he have dominion from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth!
10May the kings of Tarshish and of the isles render him tribute, may the kings of Sheba and Seba bring gifts!
11May all kings fall down before him, all nations serve him!
12For he delivers the needy when he calls, the poor and him who has no helper.
13He has pity on the weak and the needy, and saves the lives of the needy.

Reading 2
Ephesians 3: 2 - 3, 5 - 6

2assuming that you have heard of the stewardship of God's grace that was given to me for you,
3how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I have written briefly.
5which was not made known to the sons of men in other generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;
6that is, how the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.

Gospel
Matthew 2: 1 - 12

1Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying,
2"Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the East, and have come to worship him."
3When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him;
4and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.
5They told him, "In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it is written by the prophet:
6`And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will govern my people Israel.'"
7Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star appeared;
8and he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, "Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him bring me word, that I too may come and worship him."
9When they had heard the king they went their way; and lo, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came to rest over the place where the child was.
10When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy;
11and going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.
12And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.
