Memorial of Saint Rose of Lima, Virgin ~ 23 August 2014

Isabel de Flores was born to parents of Spanish descent at Lima, Peru 20 April, 1586 and died there the 24 August, 1617. Isabel developed a talent for gardening, so it is not surprising that she took the name “Rose” as her confirmation name. She obtained her parents’ permission to be enrolled in the Third Order of Saint Dominic; from her childhood she had taken Saint Catherine of Siena as her model, and she then redoubled her penance. The Blessed Sacrament seemed virtually her only food. Her love for it was intense. Her fasting was near miraculous; during Lent in particular, she denied herself her former single piece of bread each day, to consume only a few orange seeds. Her disciplines were of an almost incredible severity, and her hair shirt reached from her shoulders to her wrists and knees; not satisfied with its rudeness, she armed it with iron nails. The cell of Saint Rose was a garden hut, her couch a box of broken tiles. Concealed by her veil, a silver crown armed with ninety sharp points encircled her head. More than once, when she shuddered at the prospect of a night of torture, a voice said, “My cross was yet more painful.” The demon tormented her for fifteen years with insupportable temptations; but God sustained His spouse against them, though she would gladly have died rather than live any longer in their clutches. When a Dutch fleet prepared to attack the city of Lima, Rose took her place before the tabernacle, and wept because she felt unworthy to die in its defense, as she hoped she might; the enemy weighed anchor soon afterwards and departed without attempting a siege. All of Saint Rose’s sufferings were offered for the conversion of sinners, and the thought of the multitudes in hell was ever before her soul.

We honour Rose of Lima on 23 August. She was the first person from the New World, the Americas to be named a saint. She was beatified by Pope Clement IX in 1667 and canonized in 1671 by Clement X. St. Rose of Lima is the patroness of Latin America and the Philippines. St. Rose’s life teaches us to reach out to our neighbour and to use our talents to help them live better lives.

O God, you set Saint Rose of Lima on fire with your love,

so that, secluded from the world

in the austerity of a life of penance,

she might give herself to you alone;

grant, we pray, that through her intercession,

we may tread the paths of life on earth

and drink at the stream of your delights in heaven.

St. Scholastica, Virgin (Memorial)

St. Scholastica, a Nun, was born at Norcia in Umbria, Italy, in the 5th century. She was the twin sister of St. Benedict of Norcia.

She consecrated herself to God in early childhood and lived near her brother's monastery at Monte Cassino.

Before her death, she went to visit her brother as she usually do once a year. When night began drawing close, St. Benedict decided to return to his Abbey from their nearby meeting place, but his sister implored him to stay there with her through the night. When he insisted on going, St. Scholastica cried to God in prayer and a very heavy rain began, with flashing thunder, thereby preventing St. Benedict from going but to stay and continue their spiritual talk with her.

Three days later, while in his cell room St. Benedict saw the soul of his sister leaving her body and descending to Heaven in form of a dove.

She is the patron of Nuns and invoked against storm and rain

St. Colette of Corbie, Virgin (Memorial)

St. Colette was born 13 January 1381, at Corbie in Picardy, France. She was given the name Nicolette Boellet, but called Colette. Colette joined successively the Bequines, the Benedictines, and the Urbanist Poor Clares. She the second Holy Mother and reformer reformer of the Franciscan Order of the Colettine Poor Clares (Clarisses). she experienced the great visions which would move her to action. In her first vision, Colette witnessed the moral destruction of the world, a vision which left her frightened and moved. Later, had another vision in which she saw Saint Francis of Assisi come before the Lord, and kneeling down, he begged, “Lord, give me this woman for the reform of my Order”

Saint Colette, remembering the vision of the Lord depicting the moral decline of society and the Church, never ceased praying for the sanctity of the Church and it’s leaders. In response, she was continuously plagued by the Devil, who visited upon her torture and temptation. She was frequently surrounded by stinging insects, who swarmed around her, stinging her repeatedly. Decomposing corpses of criminals and heretics would miraculously appear in her cell, even while she was walled in. Saint Colette further would further undergo physical torture and the hands of demons, leaving her bruised, broken, and exhausted. St. Colette once complained to Our Lord that the demons prevented her from praying. "Cease, then," said the devil to her, "your prayers to the great Master of the Church, and we will cease to torment you; for you torment us more by your prayers than we do you."

She died at Ghent, Belgium on 6 March, 1447. She was beatified on 23 January, 1740, and later canonized on 24 May, 1807. She is known as St. Colette of Corbie. She was not only a woman of sincere piety, but also intelligent and energetic, and exercised a remarkable moral power over all her associates. She was very austere and mortified in her life, for which God rewarded her by supernatural favours and the gift of miracles.

Saint Colette serves as a reminder for us that times of struggle and suffering can lead to redemption and conversion. In her words, "If there be a true way that leads to the Everlasting Kingdom, it is most certainly that of suffering, patiently endured." These words, modelled after the life of Jesus Christ, His suffering for us, call us to patience in this world, and life everlasting in the next.

"We must faithfully keep what we have promised. 

If through human weakness we fail, 

we must always without delay arise again 

by means of holy penance, 

and give our attention to leading a good life 

and to dying a holy death. 

May the Father of all mercy, 

the Son by his holy passion, 

and the Holy Spirit,

St. Teresa of Jesus (St. Teresa of Avila), Virgin, Doctor of the Church (Memorial)

St. Teresa was born in Avila (28 March, 1515) and died in Alba, Spain (1582). In 1533 she entered the Carmelite Order; for eighteen years she suffered physical pain and spiritual dryness. Under divine inspiration and with the approval of Pope Pius IV, she began the work of reforming the Carmelite Order. In spite of heavy opposition and constant difficulties, she founded thirty-two reformed convents. When dying she often repeated the words: "Lord, I am a daughter of the Church!" At the time of her death, a sweet odor pervaded the room in which her body lay; so strong was the odor that it was found necessary to open windows, allowing outside air to dilute the intoxicating fragrance. Her holy body rests upon the high altar of the Carmelite church in Alba, Spain and her heart with its mysterious wound is reserved in a precious reliquary on the Epistle side of the altar. She was canonized by by Pope Gregory XV on 12 March 1622. Pope Paul VI, on September 27, 1970, officially declared the Carmelite nun to be the first woman Doctor of the Church.

Patron of bodily ills, headaches, lacemakers; laceworkers, loss of parents, people in need of grace, people in religious orders, people ridiculed for their piety, sick people, sickness and Spain.

O God, who through your Spirit raised up Saint Teresa of Jesus to show the Church the way to seek perfection, grant that we may always be nourished by the food of her heavenly teaching and fired with longing for true holiness. St. Faustina, Virgin (Optional Memorial)

Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska 

the apostle of the Divine Mercy
and "Secretary" of His Divine Mercy

(1905-1938)

On 5 October, we celebrate the optional memorial of St. Maria Faustina Kowalska, a Polish nun, born Helen Kowalska, she had a religious vocation from the age of seven, after being rejected by a number of congregations, she finally entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy in Warsaw in 1925. Faustina was chosen by Jesus to remind the world of the mystery of God's merciful love, the devotion to Divine Mercy. Jesus appeared to her as "King of Divine Mercy" and said to Faustina, "Today I am sending you with my mercy to the people of the whole world." It is his desire to heal the aching world, to draw all people into his merciful heart of love. In her spiritual life she also distinguished herself with a love of the Eucharist and a deep devotion to the Mother of Mercy.

St. Faustina's mission was to spread devotion to God's Mercy, which she called His greatest attribute. She was to do this by founding a congregation of religious devoted to the Divine Mercy and by having an image painted of Christ's mercy (Jesus with red and white rays radiating from His Heart, with the legend "Jesus, I trust in you"). She is spread the Divine Mercy Chaplet, a devotion revealed by Jesus to her and to ask the Holy Father to establish the Sunday after Easter as the Feast of Divine Mercy. Jesus promised great graces to those who would pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy.

Faustina was declared Faustina Venerable on 7 March, 1992 by Pope John Paul II and later beatified on 18 April, 1993, and finally canonized by Pope John Paul II, on 30 April, 2000. The first Sunday after Easter was declared Divine Mercy Sunday.

O God, who manifest your almighty power above all by pardoning and showing mercy, bestow, we pray, your grace abundantly upon us and make those hastening to attain your promises heirs to the treasures of heaven. Prayer of St. Faustina before the Most Blessed Sacrament

I adore You, Lord and Creator, hidden in the Most Blessed Sacrament. I adore You for all the works of Your hands, that reveal to me so much wisdom, goodness and mercy, O Lord. You have spread so much beauty over the earth and it tells me about Your beauty, even though these beautiful things are but a faint reflection of You, incomprehensible Beauty. And although You have hidden Yourself and concealed Your beauty, my eye, enlightened by faith, reaches You and my soul recognizes its Creator, its Highest Good, and my heart is completely immersed in prayer of adoration.

My Lord and Creator, Your goodness encourages me to converse with You. Your mercy abolishes the chasm which separates the Creator from the creature. To converse with You, O Lord, is the delight of my heart. In You I find everything that my heart could desire. Here You light illumines my mind, enabling it to know You more and more deeply. Here streams of graces flow down upon my heart. Here my soul draws eternal life. O my Lord and Creator, You alone, beyond all these gifts, give Your own self to me and unite Yourself intimately with Your miserable creature.

O Christ, let my greatest delight be to see You loved and Your praise and glory proclaimed, especially the honor of Your mercy. O Christ, let me glorify Your goodness and mercy to the last moment of my life, with every drop of my blood and every beat of my heart. Would that I be transformed into a hymn of adoration of You. St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus, Virgin, Doctor of the Church (Memorial)

Marie Thérèse Martin was born at Alençon, France on 2 January, 1873. At the age of 15, she obtained permission to enter the Carmel of Lisieux. She attained a very high degree of holiness by carrying out her ordinary daily duties with perfect fidelity, having a childlike confidence in God's providence and merciful love and being ready to be at the service of others at all times. She also had a great love of the Church and a zeal for the conversion of souls. She died of consumption on 30 September, 1897, at the age of 24, and was canonized in 1925. She has never ceased to fulfill her promise: "I will pass my heaven in doing good on earth." Although just an obscure cloistered Carmelite nun, she has had universal appeal since her death. St. Thérèse is the patroness of all foreign missions and patroness of France. Pope John Paul II declared her a Doctor of the Church in 1997.

St. Thérèse is represented in a Carmelite habit holding a bunch of roses in memory of her promise to “let fall a shower of roses” of miracles and other favours.

• I am a very little soul, who can offer only very little things to the Lord. 
• I will spend my Heaven doing good on earth. 
• After my death I will let fall a shower of roses. 
• While desiring to be a priest, I admire and envy the humility of St. Francis of Assisi and I feel the vocation of imitating him in refusing the sublime dignity of the priesthood.

Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus is also known as Saint Thérèse of Lisieux and Saint Thérèse of the Holy Face.

O God, who open your Kingdom to those who are humble and to little ones, lead us to follow trustingly in the little way of Saint Therese, so that through her intercession we may see your eternal glory revealed.
