Excerpts from the Diary of Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska

St. Faustina is known throughout the world as the, "Apostle of The Divine Mercy."

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Diary Entry 1142:"My daughter, be diligent

in writing down every sentence
I tell you concerning My mercy,
because this is meant for a great number
of souls who will profit from it."

Diary Entry 47:"Paint an image

according to the pattern you see,
with the signature:
Jesus, I Trust in You.
I desire that this image be venerated,
first in your chapel, and [then] throughout the world."

Diary Entry 48:"I promise that the soul
that will venerate this image
will not perish.
I also promise victory over [its] enemies
already here on earth,
especially at the hour of death.
I Myself will defend it as My own glory."

Diary Entry 49:"My image already is

in your soul.
I desire that there be a Feast of Mercy.
I want this image,
which you will paint with a brush,
to be solemnly blessed on the first Sunday after Easter;
that Sunday is to be the Feast of Mercy."

Diary Entry 299: "When on one occasion,
my confessor told me to ask the Lord Jesus
the meaning of the two rays in the image.
I answered, "Very well, I will ask the Lord."
During prayer I heard these words within me.
"The two rays denote
Blood and Water.
The pale ray stands for the Water
which makes souls righteous.
The red ray stands for the Blood
which is the life of souls...
These two rays issued forth
from the very depths of My tender mercy
when My agonized Heart was opened
by a lance on the Cross.
These rays shield souls
from the wrath of My Father.
Happy is the one who will dwell in their shelter,
for the just hand of God
shall not lay hold of him.
I desire that the first Sunday after Easter
be the Feast of Mercy."

Diary Entry 300:"Ask of my faithful servant

[Father Sopocko] that,
on this day, he tell the whole world of My great mercy;
that whoever approaches the Fount of Life
on this day will be granted
complete remission of sins and punishment.
Mankind will not have peace
until it turns with trust to My mercy.
Oh how much I am hurt by a soul's distrust!
Such a soul professes
that I am Holy and Just,
but does not believe that I am Mercy
and does not trust in My Goodness.
Even the devils glorify My Justice
but do not believe in My Goodness.
My Heart rejoices in this title of Mercy."

Diary Entry 301:"Proclaim that mercy
is the greatest attribute of God.
All the works of My hands
are crowned with Mercy."

Diary Entry 474: I found myself pleading with God
for the world with words heard interiorly.
As I was praying in this manner,
I saw the Angel's helplessness:
he could not carry out the just punishment
which was rightly due for sins.
Never before had I prayed
with such inner power as I did then.

Diary Entry 475: The words with which
I entreated God are these:
"Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood,
Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son,
Our Lord Jesus Christ for our sins
and those of the whole world:
for the sake of His sorrowful Passion,
have mercy on us."

Diary Entry 476: The next morning, when I entered Chapel,
I heard these words interiorly:
Every time you enter the Chapel,
immediately recite the prayer
which I taught you yesterday.
When I had said the prayer,
in my soul I heard these words:
"This prayer will serve to appease My wrath.
You will recite it for nine days,
on the beads of the rosary,
in the following manner:
First of all, you will say one OUR FATHER
and HAIL MARY
and the I BELIEVE IN GOD.
Then on the OUR FATHER beads
you will say the following words:
"Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood,
Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son,
Our Lord Jesus Christ,
in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world."
On the HAIL MARY beads you
will say the following words:
"For the sake of His sorrowful Passion
have mercy on us and on the whole world.
In conclusion, three times you will
recite these words:
"Holy God,
Holy Mighty One,
Holy Immortal One,
have mercy on us and on the whole world."

Diary Entry 754: The Lord's Promise:
"The souls that say this Chaplet
will be embraced by My mercy
during their lifetime
and especially at the hour of their death.

Diary Entry 1146:"Let the greatest sinners place
their trust in My mercy.
They have the right before others to trust
in the abyss of My mercy.
My daughter, write about My mercy
towards tormented souls.
Souls that make an appeal
to My mercy delight Me.
To such souls I grant
even more graces than they ask.
I cannot punish even the greatest sinner
if he makes an appeal to My unfathomable
and inscrutable mercy.
Write: before I come
as a just Judge,
I first open wide the door of My mercy.
He who refuses to pass
through the door of My mercy
must pass through the door of my justice..."

Diary Entry 1485:"My mercy is greater than your sins
and those of the entire world.
Who can measure the extent of my goodness?
For you I descended from heaven to earth;
for you I allowed myself to be nailed to the cross;
for you I let my Sacred Heart be pierced with a lance,
thus opening wide the source of mercy for you.
Come, then, with trust
to draw graces from this fountain.
I never reject a contrite heart.
Your misery has disappeared
in the depths of My mercy.
Do not argue with Me
about your wretchedness.
You will give me pleasure
if you hand over to me
all your troubles and griefs.
I shall heap upon you
the treasures of My grace."

During Jesus' revelations to Saint Faustina on the Divine Mercy He asked on numerous occasions that a feast day be dedicated to the Divine Mercy and that this feast be celebrated on the Sunday after Easter. The liturgical texts of that day, the 2nd Sunday of Easter, concern the institution of the Sacrament of Penance, the Tribunal of the Divine Mercy, and are thus already suited to the request of Our Lord. This Feast, which had already been granted to the nation of Poland and been celebrated within Vatican City, was granted to the Universal Church by Pope John Paul II on the occasion of the canonization of Sr. Faustina on 30 April 2000. In a decree dated 23 May 2000.
